What’s it like to work with your team?
I have a great team. I couldn’t do what I do without them. They’re self-starters, flexible and know how to solve problems creatively. One of my nurse managers noticed we needed a better discharge process, so she created a process and took it to the clinical practice council. My team sees something that needs work, makes a plan and then sees it through.
What made you decide to come to Inova?
I had just earned my master’s degree, and I knew I wanted to take my career to a different level. I applied and interviewed four times during one month. I was really happy about that because I knew they were taking their time to find the right candidate.
What’s the workplace like at Inova?
I always tell candidates that it’s a different culture here. Inova has so many resources. You have the equipment to do your job, so you can deliver safe, excellent-quality care to your patients. That’s what makes your job rewarding and makes you want to come to work.
What benefits does Inova offer employees?
I’m a big advocate of the education benefits, and I encourage my employees to take advantage of those. Right now, close to one-third of my staff have ER certifications, and about six of my nurses are in school. I know it is a big part of retention, so I try hard to get my staff into the system and use the available funding for their future.
What makes Inova different?
It’s a very positive nursing environment. There is good dialogue between staff at all levels, and the nurses know they are respected for their knowledge and competency. What they have to say for their patients matters. Even in major hospitals, nurses jump from floor to floor looking for that kind of environment. But we have that here at Inova. We’re all on the same team.
